Full Description

Banked and ditched linear features in fields to the northeast of Amen Corner, Gussage All Saints are visible on current Lidar imagery (1). The features are broad and slightly sinuous in form. Two parallel features are aligned east to west around 155m apart and extending below a former h istoric field boundary of probable medieval origin (see OS 1st Edition map [2]). Two additional banked linears flank a substantial historic field boundary to the west, possibly with a ditch in between (1). The historic boundary is probably medieval in origin but may fossilise an older feature. Alternatively it may also have formed part of a medieval hollow way. The features may be field boundaries of medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible; current Lidar imagery also indicates a probable late prehistoric field system (MDO39859) to the northwest, on the opposite side of the road. The pattern of historic field boundaries suggests possible continuity of this, with some of the field boundaries potentially informing the pattern of enclosure into the medieval period.. The features are within a modern cropping field and not visible on current Google Earth imagery. They may be vulnerable to ploughing. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
