Monument record MDO39892 - Possible Neolithic long barrow, Knowlton, Woodlands
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Two short linear ditches, possibly representing traces of a Neolithic long barrow, are visible to the southwest of Knowlton on a 1989 oblique aerial photograph. They are 19.2m and 14m long respectively. The ditches, whose form resembles the quarry ditches of a long barrow, appear within the perimeter ditch of a Bronze Age round barrow (MDO6478). This appearance suggests that a long barrow lies beneath, or has been converted into, a round barrow. Alternatively, the linear ditches may be features within the round barrow. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Two short ditched linears visible to the southwest of Knowlton on a 2014 vertical aerial photograph may be of early prehistoric origin as they appears to lie within a Bronze Age barrow (MDO6478). The ditches are recorded in the NRHE as being associated with a possible Neolithic long barrow. <4>
