Full Description

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of possibly three ring ditches, visible as cropmarks in a field West of Knowlton: C - SU 01821021 (Least definite of the three, possibly vehicle turning marks). <1> SU 01731000; SU 01831009. Two round barrows, lying south west of the 'Knowlton Circles'. <2> The three round barrows described by authority 1have been mapped by from aerial photographs EH's Knowlton Circles Project. As a result of that survey, the position and details of the barrows was established more accurately: SU 0183 1022. Described as 'C' above. Definde by a single circular ditch 27.3m in diameter. The barrows described by authority 3 seem to be those described as 'A' and 'B' above. <3> A possible Bronze Age barrow is faintly visible as a cropmark to the southwest of Knowlton on a 1989 vertical aerial photograph <4>. The possible barrow is sub-circular in form, measuring 22m across and with a single 0.8m wide exterior ditch. There is a possible smaller conjoined barrow on its northeast side, recorded separately (MDO40011). The barrow is located within a cropping field and may be vulnerable to ploughing. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
