Full Description

Philipston, earthwork remains of a Medieval settlement on low-lying ground near the River Allen, SU 027108, in the south of the parish. Mentioned in Domesday and in Rolls of 1241 and 1285. <2-3> Ditched and banked earthworks to the east of Brockington Farm are visible on 1990s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery. <4-5> The features may be medieval in origin and associated with the former Domesday settlement of Philipston; they comprise a sub-circular platform 55m by 61.5m set into the slope on its east side and scarped on its west side. A further linear scarp heads northeast, forming a low lying linear platform to the west. The scarp is now followed by the line of a historic field boundary present on the OS 1st Edition map. <1> The west side of the sub-circular platform may have been truncated by a sluice associated with the post medieval water meadow to the west (MDO40020), shown on the OS 1st Edition map <1>. The south side of the platform is cut by a later historic field boundary, also present on the OS 1st Edition map <1>. A series of parallel linear ditched features to the northwest of the platform may be additional plot or field boundaries associated with the medieval settlement. Alternatively these linear features may also be associated with the post medieval water meadow to the west (MDO40020). The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
