Summary

Three small sub-circular cropmarks within the Knowlton Barrow Group are visible on 1995 aerial photographs. The features may represent small Prehistoric or Roman pits. The pits are located between the outer ditches of the Great Barrow and Church Henge at Knowlton. The feature was mapped by English Heritage's Knowlton Circles Project and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

SU 0246 1021. Three pits of uncertain date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The pits are located between the outer ditches of the Great Barrow (SU 01 SW 106) and Church Henge (SU 01 SW 102) at Knowlton, and are probably Prehistoric or Roman in date. <1> Three small sub-circular cropmarks within the Knowlton Barrow Group are visible on 1990s aerial photographs. <2> The features measure between 1.3m by 2.5m; 4m by 5.8m and 3.5m by 5.9m. They are located adjacent to the southwest side of the Great Barrow in the Knowlton Barrow Group (MDO6443). The features may represent small prehistoric pits. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
