Monument record MDO40060 - Possible prehistoric barrows, Knowlton, Woodlands

A cluster of four sub-oval cropmarks within the Knowlton Barrow Group are visible on 1970s aerial photographs. The features may represent prehistoric pits or barrows of Neolithic or Bronze Age date. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

A cluster of four sub-oval cropmarks within the Knowlton Barrow Group are visible on 1970s aerial photographs (1). The features are elongated sub-oval ditches, typically measuring around 3m wide and between 10m and 16m in length. They are broadly orientated southeast to northwest and are located on the south side of the Great Barrow (MDO6443). The features may represent prehistoric pits or possibly barrows; probably in this case Neolithic or Bronze Age in origin. They are also located close to a series of ditched linear features thought to be part of a late preshitoric or Romano-British field system and may alternatively be features associated with this. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
