Monument record MDO40091 - Banjo enclosure and settlement, Sixpenny Handley

An enclosure has been identified on aerial photographs. It has been described as 'banjo' and settlement. The site was identified on a slide of Mr M Green. Other ditches have been identified and intersect with the monument on the northwest and southern sides. Copious surface finds include coins of Durotrigian and Coriosolitan to 4th century (Mr M Green).

ST 988 162 (GCE) A rapid examination of air photography <1.1> suggests the presence of an Iron Age or Romano-British settlement and associated linear ditches visible as cropmarks on a spur southwest of Sixpenny Handley. The settlement consists of a 'Banjo' enclosure (with an enclosure attached to its north side) with east-facing entrance and numerous pits in and around; c.100m west is a second curvilinear enclosure with an east-facing entrance, presumably part of the same settlement. Various linear features lead off the 'Banjo' to the northeast and south. There are also possible traces of a field system. <1> ST 988162.
