Summary

A partial ring ditch in St Giles's Park is visible as a cropmark on a 1996 aerial photograph. The feature is presumed to represent a barrow of Bronze Age origin, although its small size may indicate a later, Iron Age to Roman, date. The ring ditch is 14.9m by 12.6 wide with a broadly 1.7m wide outer ditch. The south side of the ring ditch is not visible. This feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on air photographs. It is located within St Giles Park. A partial ring ditch in St Giles's Park is visible as a cropmark on a 1996 aerial photograph <3>. The ring ditch is 14.9m by 12.6 wide with a broadly 1.7m wide outer ditch. The south side of the ring ditch is not visible, possibly lost under or obscured by a copse of trees <3>. The feature is presumed to represent a barrow of Bronze Age origin, although its small size may indicate a later, Iron Age to Roman, date. It is situated immediately adjacent to the south side of a large ditched enclosure considered to be a possible Neolithic long barrow (MDO40334). The feature is still faintly visible on a 2014 aerial photograph <4> and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
