Monument record MDO40336 - Historic field boundaries, St Giles's Park, Wimborne St Giles

Ditched linears in St Giles's Park are visible as cropmarks on a 1996 aerial photograph. The features are presumed to represent historic field boundaries of possible medieval or post medieval origin, although a late prehistoric date is possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Ditched linears in St Giles's Park are visible as cropmarks on a 1996 aerial photograp (1). The features comprise narrow slightly curvilinear ditches that run parallel and perpendicular to each other on a broadly north to south alignment. They also broadly align with some of the adjacent historic filed boundaries present on the OS 1st Edition map and are presumed to represent historic field boundaries of possible medieval or post medieval origin, although a late prehistoric date is also possible. At their western end they overlie a large ditched enclosure considered to be a possible Neolithic long barrow (MDO40332). The features are still faintly visible on a 2014 aerial photograph (2) and were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
