Monument record MDO40492 - Possible historic trackway, Wimborne St Giles
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A double ditched linear feature to the north of Manor House, Wimborne St Giles, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The feature is considered likely to be a trackway of possible medieval or post medieval date. It is possible, however, that it is of earlier origin as it adjoins features to the southwest associated with a possible Iron Age or Romano-British field system (MDO40491). The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description
A double ditched linear feature to the north of Manor House, Wimborne St Giles, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The feature comprises two parallel ditches, around 2m wide and 3.5m apart. The feature is aligned northeast to southwest and crosses several present-day fields. At its southwest end it incorporates a right angled turn to the west before continuing southwest. At this point it aligns with, and corresponds to, further ditched linear features considered to be part of a late prehistoric field system of possible Iron Age or Romano-British date (MDO40491).
It is thought likely that the feature is a trackway of probable medieval or post medieval date, although it is possible that it has an earier origin contemporary with field system (MDO40491)
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
