Summary

Ditched linear earthworks on Winkton Common to the west of Burton are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered to be drainage ditches of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

Ditched linear earthworks on Winkton Common to the west of Burton are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features comprise a series of short linear ditches spaced around 8m apart and contained within two narrow historic enclosures on the east side of Winkton Comon. They are considered to be drainage ditches of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. The majority of features are still visible on current Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
