Full Description

Ditched linear earthworks on the Avon river floodplain at Christchurch are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features comprise a long rectilinear ditch aligned southeast to northwest across the width of a historic enclosure present on the OS 1st Edition map (2). Shorter parallel linear ditches run off this linear to the northeast, towards the river. The features are presumed to be historic drainage features of probable post medieval date but the longer linear feature may also have functioned as a field boundary. The features are still visible on current Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
