A post medieval extractive pit on the Avon river floodplain at Christchurch is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The feature comprises a shallow u-shaped scarp around 55m long by 50.5m wide. It is situated 90m to the west of a small gravel pit (MWX4790) marked as 'old gravel pit' on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The feature is presumed to also be an area of post medieval gravel extraction. The feature is still visible within the modern water works site on current Google Earth imagery. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
