Full Description
Banked and ditched linear earthworks on the Avon River floodplain to the northeast of Christchurch are visible on 1940s and 1950s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-3).
The features comprise narrow rectilinear ditches and banks that interlink to form small enclosures within larger historic fields present on the OS 1st Edition map and with boundaries of possible medieval origin. The features are considered to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. Some of the features may be interspersed drainage ditches.
The majority of features are visible on 2012 Google Earth imagery (4). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
