Full Description

Banked and ditched linear earthworks on the Avon River floodplain to the northeast of Christchurch are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features are typically narrow and rectilinear in character and form a series of rectilinear enclosures that in some cases underlie clearly later modern field boundaries. Some smaller narrow rectilinear enclosures are also visible and these correspond with other similar features present on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The features are therefore considered to be predominantly historic field boundaries, most likely post medieval in date. Some features may include or incorporate post medieval drainage ditches. The featrues are still largely visible on current Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
