Full Description

Ditched linear features to the southeast of Holfleet Cottage,Winkton, are visible as very faint cropmarks on 2006 aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features comprise short narrow rectilinear ditches that appear to form narrow enclosures or trackways. The features are situated adjacent to the south side of a late prehistoric ring ditch (MDO40566) and may be associated with this feature. An additional longer linear ditched feature is situated to the northwest of the ring ditch and may also be part of this associated group (although this may be a later feature). The features may be field boundaries of late prehistoric date, possibly of Iron Age or Romano-British origin, but it is possible they are alternatively of modern agricultural origin. If they are contemporary with the ring ditch (MDO40566) to the north then together the associated features appear to form a possible small banjo enclosure with associated field boundaries and trackways. It is considered, however, that the ring ditch may be an earlier monument, possibly a Bronze Age barrow. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
