Full Description
Ditched and banked linear features on the Avon floodplain to the southwest of Jumpers Common are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise narrow linear trenches between 5m and 10m in length, typically with upcast material forming banks along one or more sides. The features are dispersed across this area of floodplain and have the appearance of possible military practice trenches, although they may alternatively be extractive in origin; there is evidence for possible extraction (MDO40594; MDO40596; MDO40597; MDO40598) on this part of the floodplain, possibly with some features (e.g. MDO40594; MDO40596) seeing some re-use during the 1940s (2).
The site is within the golf course on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
