Full Description

The scarps of probable extractive pits on the Avon floodplain to the southwest of Jumpers Common are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features comprise two elongated sub-oval scarps 22m and 47.4m long and up to 9m and 14.5m wide. They are situated on the north side of a trackway on the northeast edge of the floodplain; both the trackway and adjacent features are shown on the OS 1st Edition map (but not named). The features are presumed to be extractive pits, probably gravel pits, of post medieval date. The site is in open ground but under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the features are not obviously visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
