Monument record MDO40744 - Possible historic field boundaries, Cottage Farm, Colehill

Two long parallel ditched curvilinear features to the northeast of Cottage Farm, Colehill, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery. The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries or trackways of possible medieval date, although a later origin is also possible. They are located to the west of a series of linears that may be part of a late prehistoric field system (MDO40743) and it is also possible that these longer curvilinear features are associated with this. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Two long parallel ditched curvilinear features to the northeast of Cottage Farm, Colehill, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2). The two linears are narrow and slightly curvilinear in form. They are aligned east to west and set 77m apart. They cross three historic enclosures present on the OS 1st Edition map and appear to underlie the upstanding field boundaries. The features run into a series of further linear features to the east that may be part of a late prehistoric field system (MDO40743). Although both sets of features may be contemporary and part of a wider area of late prehistoric activity, it is considered more likely that these two longer curvilinear features are historic field boundaries or trackways of possible medieval date, although a later origin is also feasible. The features are faintly visible on 2007 and 2012 Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.2
