Monument record MDO40833 - Historic field boundaries, Furzehill, Colehill

Dtched linear features in fields on the southeast side of Furzehill, Colehill, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered to be historic field boundaries of possible post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Dtched linear features in fields on the southeast side of Furzehill, Colehill, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features are located within two historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and whose boundaries are potentially medieval in origin (2). One narrow rectilinear ditch in the northernmost of the two fields sub-divides the enclosure almost equally in two. A long curvilinear feature in the southernmost field divides the enclosure lengthways (east to west), with a shorter rectilinear ditch perpendicular to this creating two small enclosures on its south side. The features are considered to be historic field boundaries of possible post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. The site is still partially fields on current Google Earth imagery, although the southernmost enclosure is completely wooded. The features in both areas are no longer visible.They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
