Monument record MDO40867 - Historic field boundaries, High Hall, Pamphill

Banked and ditched linear features in fields to the northeast of High Hall are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Banked and ditched linear features in fields to the northeast of High Hall are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features are narrow and broadly rectilinear in form, with a slight curve to some. They extend the breadth of an irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, which borders the River Allan to the east (2). The enclosure also contains a series of linear drainage ditches, part of an extensive system (MDO40868) along the banks of the River Allan and probably post medieval in date. It is not absolutely clear but the linear features appear to be earlier than the drainage features. They are presumed to be historic field boundaries of early post medieval or medieval origin. The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery and the features remain faintly visible.They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
