Full Description

Ditched linear features in a field to the northeast of Stanbridge are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features comprise two southeast to northwest aligned linear ditches, narrow and rectilinear in form. The two features form a broken line across the centre of an irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). Their line is obscured by trees filling a post medieval extractive pit (MDO40875), which is also featured on the 1st Edition map (2). The east side of the extractive pit is shown on the OS 1st Edition map as a straight line, potentially respecting the same line as the two ditched linears (2). The extractive pit appears to extend eastwards beyond the linear features on current Lidar imagery (3). This may reflect the former extent of the extractive pit, which by the late 19th century appears reduced to a smaller hollow filled by trees (2). It is possible that the linears therefore post-date the extractive pit but the relationship is not entirely clear . The features are presumed to be sections of historic field boundary of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. The features are still faintly visible on a 2002 vertical aerial photograph (4). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
