Full Description

The linear banks and ditches of an extensive post medieval drainage system to the west and northeast of Pilford Farm are visible on aerial photographs (1-3). The interlinking banks and ditches extend across a number of irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (4). Some of the more curvilinear ditches appear to link in to a system of larger curvilinear drainage channels, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (4). To the northeast of Pilfor Farm are a series of more rectilinear banked and ditched linears that may be part of a different phase of drainage. A smaller area of interlinking rectilinear ditches to the south of Brookside House may similarly be later in origin. Some of the linear and curvilinear features may dually funtion as field boundaries. The site is generally still fields on current Google Earth imagery and the predominant features are still visible, although Pilford Farm has extended over part of the site . The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
