Monument record MDO40984 - Possible post medieval trackways, Petersham Lane, Holt

Ditched curvilinear features in fields on the west side of Petersham Lane are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features may be those of historic trackways and/or field boundaries of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Ditched curvilinear features in fields on the west side of Petersham Lane are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features comprise a series of narrow curvilinear ditches that extend across a number of irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose predominantly curvilinear field boundaries indicate a probable medieval origin (3). The features are considered likely to be historic trackways of probable post medieval date but it is possible that some of the features are alternatively historic field boundaries. In that case their curvilinear form may indicate a possible medieval origin. The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but under ploughing and cropping. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
