Please read our .

Summary

A post medieval extractive pit to the southwest of Brockington Farm, Gussage All Saints, is visible on current Lidar imagery. The feature is rec orded as an old chalk pit on the OS 1st Edition map. The extent of the earthworks is greater than that shown on the OS 1st Edition map, however, and as it is situated within a possible deserted medieval village (MDO6412), some of the earthwork detail may alternatively part of this. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A post medieval extractive pit to the southwest of Brockington Farm, Gussage All Saints, is visible on current Lidar imagery (1). The feature comprises a 44.7m by 35.3m scarped depression, with an irregular 58m long linear scarp to the west of this. The feature is rec orded as an old chalk pit on the OS 1st Edition map. The feature is situated towards the southwest end of a possible deserted medieval village (MDO6412). The extent of the feature is greater than that shown on the OS 1st Edition map and there may be a trackway or hollow way immediately adjacent to its east side (1). It is possible that some of the earthworks showing up on current Lidar imagery are alternatively associated with the deserted medieval village rather than the chalk pit. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
