Monument record MDO41058 - Undated boundary banks, Parks Farm, Leigh, Wimborne Minster
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Three broad banked linear features to the northeast of Park Farm are visible on current Lidar imagery. The features are situated adjacent to and east of Leigh park medieval deer park (MDO5441) and adjacent to and north of a Roman road (MDO5439). The features form a funnel that opens out to the south where a group of small post medieval extractive pits or ponds (MDO41057) are situated. It is possible that the features are boundary banks or field boundaries of possible medieval to post medieval date but alternatively these could potentially be features associated with the Roman road. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description
Three broad banked linear features to the northeast of Park Farm are visible on current Lidar imagery (1).
The features are broad in character, between 5m and 7m wide. Two of the linears are aligned north-south and east to west and are positioned to form an acute angle at their northeast corner, perhaps reflecting two sides of an irregular enclosure 108m long by 103m deep.
A third linear is situated to the southeast of the first two; this is aligned northeast to southwest, turning south to run parallel to the westernmost linear at a distance of 17.4m to the east. This linear could also reflect part of a sub-rectangular enclosure or could alternatively be part of a coherent feature along with the other two linears, which together could form a funnelled enclosure, possibly for the directing of stock - or deer? The south end of the feature coincides with a small group of possible extractive pits or ponds (MDO41057) of possible post medieval origin. It is not possible to say whether these features are associated with each other.
The features are situated adjacent to and east of Leigh park medieval deer park (MDO5441) and adjacent to and north of a Roman road (MDO5439). It is possible that the features are boundary banks or field boundaries of possible medieval to post medieval date but alternatively these could potentially be features associated with the Roman road.
The site is is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery. The features are faintly visible in the year 2012 (2). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
