Monument record MDO41070 - Possible medieval ridge and furrow, Knighton Farm Golf Course, Poole

Areas of ridged and ditched cultivation marks at what is now Knighton Farm Golf Course are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Areas of ridged and ditched cultivation marks at what is now Knighton Farm Golf Course are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The features are indistinct but comprise parallel ridges set between 4m and 6m apart with 1m to 2m wide ditches in between. The cultivation marks are bounded by scarped banks (MDO41068) that form a series of low terraces along the north and west sides of a neck of land between two sections of the River Stour. The terraces and areas of cultivation do not generally correspond with any historic enclosure boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map; those on the west side are, however, bordered by woodland strips to the west and a historic trackway and possible field boundary on the east (3). The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although a later origin for some or all of the cultivation marks is also possible. The site is largely part of Knighton Farm Golf Course on current Google Earth imagery but the norttheast area is still open ground and the features are partially visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
