Full Description

A scarped hollow feature in the corner of a field at Canford Magna is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The feature comprises a scarped bank on its north and west sides. This appears to contain a hollow or ditched feature. The south and east sides of the feature are not visible as they are under tree cover but the feature may be contained by a field boundary and trackway to the west and a trackway to the south, these features being recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The OS 1st Edition map also records springs at this location and the feature may be a man-made structure associated with these, although it could be natural in origin. Its date is unknown but if man-made could potentially be medieval to post medieval in origin. The site is developed as housing on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
