Full Description

A cluster of small post medieval extractive pits on heathland to the south of Canford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs(1). The features comprise two irregular scarped hollows between 16m and 28m long and 11.6m and 24m wide. The largest of these two features cuts through a former banked field boundary (MDO41161) of probable post medieval origin. Adjacent to these two features to the west and south are a series of small irregular ditched features with straight cut angular edges. The features are all considered likely to be the result of post medieval extraction. The site is still open heath and partial tree cover on current Google Earth imagery and some of the features are still faintly visible as lighter patches of ground. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
