Full Description
Ditched linear and curvilinear features on the open heath to the south of Canford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features are presumed to be historic trackways, probably of post medieval or perhaps early 20th century origin. The features include a curious sub-oval ditched linear feature that interlinks with the other features and has the same characteristics but its purpose is unclear. It may well still be a trackway or road of some description, possibly more likely to be early 20th century in origin. It may have a military function as part of the wartime military activity on the heath but this remains uncertain.
The site is a modern quarry on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
