Full Description
A small post medieval extractive pit on Canford Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The feature comprises an irregular scarped hollow up to 45m long by up to 25m wide situated on the east side of a track or roadway across the heath (1).
The feature is presumed to be associated with post medieval extraction on Canford Heath ; the heathland on which the feature is situated in 1946 (part of Canford Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.
The site is still open heath but partially under trees on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is still visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
