Monument record MDO41206 - Probable post medieval clay pit, Broadstone, Poole

An extensive area of probable post medieval extraction at Broadstone is visible on current Lidar imagery. The features may be associated with a smaller clay pit and brick works recorded at Broadstone on the OS 1st Edition map. The area of probable extraction is currently obscured by modern housing development and road improvements and it is not certain how far this once extended onto the western edges of Canford Heath. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

An extensive area of probable post medieval extraction at Broadstone is visible on current Lidar imagery (1). Some features are also partially visible on 1940s aerial photographs (2 and 3). The features comprise large scarped depressions covering an extent of at least 1000m by 500m and potentially extending further east across the edges of Canford Heath. The full extent of the site is obscured by modern housing development and road improvements and it is not clear how far this once extended onto the western edges of Canford Heath; it is possible that further areas of scarps and hollows on the western edge of Canford Heath are not entirely natural but shaped to some degree by extractive processes (1). It is posible the features are associated with and grew froma smaller clay pit and brick works recorded at Broadstone on the OS 1st Edition map (4). The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
