Full Description
An area of shallow post medieval extraction on Canford Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature comprises an area of shallow extraction up to 424m long by up to 87m widealong the edge of a low slope of ground; the heathland on which the features are situated in 1946 (part of Canford Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present. Within the area are several small sub-circular pits that may alternatively be modern military dug-outs or weapons pits associated with a wartime military training site. These smaller features are situated along the edges of the low scarp and are similar to groups of other such features dispersed across Canford Heath in the 1940s (1).
The site is still open heath but under scrubby vegetation on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is not visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
