Monument record MDO41236 - Post medieval to early 20th Century extractive pit, Knighton Heath, Poole

A series of shallow and surface extractive pits on the northeast side of Knighton Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are probably post medieval to early 20th Century in date and were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

A series of shallow and surface extractive pits on the northeast side of Knighton Heath are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features are situated on the north side of a road on a southwest-facing slope of ground. They comprise two irregular scarped depressions 20.7m by 9m and 28m by 17.5m at their greatest exents and a smaller ditched feature with clean cut rectilinear edges 11.8m by 7m at its featest extent. The site is recorded as 'workings disused' on the OS Mastermap. Even in 1945 the features are covered by low scrubby vegetation suggesting probable disuse by this time (1). The features visible in 1945 are considered likely to be post medieval to early 20th Century in date (1). The site is under trees on the south edge of a modern playing field on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP
