Full Description
A probable post medieval gravel pit to the southeast of Hampreston is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature is situated on the edge of the northeast bank of the River Stour and comprises a large irregular ditched depression up to 103.7m long and up to 68m wide. A long narrow linear ditch extends from its south side for 30m, ending in a small sub-oval 22.8m by 12m depression The feature may be an extractive pit associated with post medieval gravel extraction; there are further similar features along this section of the River Stour.
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is still faintly visible as a shallow scar; the feature is now traversed by a modern power line. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
