Full Description

Ditched and banked linear features in fields to the southeast of Hampreston are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1-3). The features are narrow and rectilinear in form and enclose regular areas of larger irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and whose boundaries are likely to be predominantly medieval in origin (4). The line of the northernmost feature is marked on the OS 1st Edition map by a dispersed row of trees (4). The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries, probably of post medieval date but an earlier origin is possible. The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery and the features are still faintly visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
