Full Description
A series of ditched linear features on heathland to the west of West Parley are visible on aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise numerous ditched linears of varying lengths, slightly curvilinear in form and running broadly parallel to each other on an east to west axis, crossing other ditched linear features that run southwest to northeast (MDO41306); the relationship between these two sets of linears is not clear; although these are not so closely set together and may be later in date, this is not certain. The features are part of a wider group of similar features on the heathland in this part of Dorset and are presumed to be trackways of probable post medieval origin, although some may be associated with wartime military training activity during the early part of the 20th Century.
The site is still open heathland, although partly under scrub and trees on current Google Earth imagery. Many of the features are still visible. They were digitally plotted from aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
