Monument record MDO41312 - Possible medieval field boundaries, Coneygar Lane, Ferndown Town

Banked linear features on the north side of Coneygar Lane are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of possible medieval, or perhaps earlier, origin. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Banked linear features on the north side of Coneygar Lane are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). Two of the features are broad and curvilinear in form and curve from north to southeast, completing the curve of a historic field boundary to the north which is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and is almost certainly at least medieval in origin (2). A banked linear to the east of these is also fairly broad and substantial in form,again suggesting a possible boundary bank or field boundary of medieval or possibly earlier date. These features correspond and align with the immediate pattern of historic enclosure, the character of which is also likely to be medieval in origin. The curvilinear feature corresponds with further curvilinear banked features on the south side of Coneygar Lane (MDO41314). These may also be boundaries of medieval date but it is just possible they are older in origin, perhaps even late prehistoric. It is possible, therefore, that some of the historic pattern of enclosure at this location is fossilising parts of an older late prehistoric agricultural landscape. The features are generally presumed to be historic field boundaries, which are likely to be medieval, and possibly earlier, in origin. The site is now Coneygar Farm on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
