Full Description
Ditched linear features at Longham are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The features are narrow and slightly irregular or curvilinear in form. They sub-divide, or are situated within, large irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose character suggest a possible medieval origin, with some later post medieval modification (3). These enclosures are partly formed by the use of historic field boundaries, partly through the use of drainage ditches as a form of historic boundary division. Some features clearly link into post medieval drainage ditches recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3).
The features are presumed to be historic drainage ditches of probable post medieval date, some of which may have had a dual function as historic field boundaries (and see MDOs 41334 and 41335).
The site is part of Dudsbury Golf Course on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
