Full Description
A ditched curvilinear feature at Longham is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature extends from the northwest corner of a historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map to its southeast corner, following part of the eastern field boundary on route (1 and 2). The predominantly rectilinear boundaries of the enclosure suggest a probable post medieval date, although the southern boundary in particular may be earlier in origin (2). The feature clearly overlies other ditched linears (MDO41348) within the same historic enclosure. These are faint in comparison but are presumed to be older trackways, possibly earlier post medieval in date, although they could potentially date anywhere between the Iron Age and early post medieval periods.
The feature is presumed to be a historic trackway of probable post medieval origin.
The site is under Longham Lakes on Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible. It was digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
