Summary

A possible post medieval clay pit at West Parley is visible as a shallow irregular depression on current Lidar imagery. The feature is adjacent to a smaller extractive pit, brickfield and kiln recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and may be a shallow clay pit associated with these features, although whether earlier or later in date is not known. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A possible post medieval clay pit at West Parley is visible as a shallow irregular depression on current Lidar imagery (1). The feature measures up to 103m long by up to 134m wide. It is situated on open ground on East Parley Common. The OS 1st Edition map records a smaller extractive pit, brickfield and kiln immediately adjacent to the southeast and the feature may be a shallow clay pit associated with these, although whether earlier or later in date is not known (2). The feature was digitally plotted from current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
