Full Description

A banked linear feature on Parley Common is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The feature is narrow and rectilinear in character, running southwest for 159m then turning south to run for an further 147m. It is situated on open heath but corresponds with the pattern and character of historic field boundaries to the west, which are not featured on the OS 1st Edition map and whose regular character indicates a probable post medieval to early 20th Century origin. The southern end of the feature runs along the west side of Mag's Barrow (MDO6230), where it potentially truncates the outer ditch of the barrow. In 1945 the feature is visible running through part of a wartime military camp (MDO41394) and it may have been modified as part of that. The site is under housing on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible. It was digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
