Full Description
Ditched and banked linear features to the east of Bailie Gate, Sturminster Marshall, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise varying sections of linear and curvilinear ditches and banks, some being separate features, some interlinked to form larger networks. The features further link into sinuous drainage channels recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2).
The features are considered likely to be post medieval drainage ditches. Two longer regular linear ditches may alternatively be historic field boundaries, also of probable post medieval date.
The site is partly under a modern golf course and ponds on Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
