Full Description

Areas of narrow ditched and ridged cultivation marks to the northwest of Henbury Farm, Sturminster Marshall, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features comprise narrow ridges set parallel to each other and approximately 3-4m apart, with a 1.5m ditch in between. The outer boundaries appear to conform to and align with adjacent field boundaries to the northeast whose regular character indicates a probable post medieval or early modern origin. The features appear to overlie a possible medieval field system (MDO41430) and indicate non-conformity with this. The features are therefore considered likely to be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow. The site is still fields on Google Earth imagery but the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted from 1940s aerial photographs by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
