Summary

An irregular ditched hollow to the east of Sturminster Marshall is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature corresponds with the southeast section of a dotted enclosure on the OS 1st Edition map, where it is shown as marshy ground. The feature may be an enclosure or pond, possibly a feature associated with a medieval field system (MDO41446) at this location. Alternatively it may be a post medieval extractive pit. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

An irregular ditched hollow to the east of Sturminster Marshall is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The feature comprises a lozionge-shaped hollow up to 32m long by up to 20m wide. It corresponds with the southeast section of a dotted enclosure on the OS 1st Edition map, where it is shown as marshy ground (2). The feature may be an enclosure or pond; it is situated within a probable medieval field sytem (MDO41446) and could potentially be associated with this. Alternatively it may be a post medieval extractive pit. The site is open fields on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is still visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
