Monument record MDO41617 - Possible medieval field boundaries, Rushcombe Bottom, Corfe Mullen

Banked linear features at Rushcombe Bottom, Corfe Mullen, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered likely to be historic field boundaries of possible medieval origin, although a later date for these features is also possible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Banked linear features at Rushcombe Bottom, Corfe Mullen, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The features comprise broad interlinking linear and curvilinear banks situated on open heathland as recorded on the OS 1st Edition map but on the southern edge of irregular historic enclosures along the valley bottom, whose curvilinear boundaries indicate a probable medieval origin (2). The banked linear features potentially correspond with the pattern of historic enclosure immediately to their north and east and they are also considered likely to be historic field boundaries of possible medieval origin, although a later date for these features is also possible. The site is partially fields and partially under trees on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
