Full Description

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation marks in a field at Hound Hillare visible on aerial photographs (1). The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow. The features comprise parallel and slightly curving ridges set approximately 5m apart with 1.2m ditches in between. The extent of the cultivation marks corresponds with historic field boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, some of which had been removed by the late 19th century leaving only loose rows of trees (2). The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although cultivation marks of later date is also a possibility. The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery but the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
