Monument record MDO42126 - Roman road, Top O'Town House, Bridport Road, Dorchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Roman road recorded in 2018 during evaluation of the proposed site of a mews-style dwelling to the rear of Top o' Town House by Terrain Archaeology. The remains of a gravel road were found overlaying the natural chalk. It was found to be constructed of layers of hard-packed sandy flint gravel layers with small flint cobbles. Though only a small part was exposed, this was interpreted as the southern edge of a road running roughly WNW-ESE. A small quantity of abraded Romano-British pottery was found in a layer of silt which probably developed after the disuse of the road.
