Monument record MDO42701 - Probable Second World War roadblock at Culliford Road rail bridge, Dorchester

Please read our .

Summary

The Pilbox Study Group note the site of a probable Second World War roadblock on Culliford Road, adjacent to its intersection with the B3144 Prince of Wales Road and immediately north of the Weymouth to London Waterloo railway. The roadblock is inferred from RAF aerial photographs dated January 1947 and may be associated with lines of concrete anti-tank blocks along the south side of Prince of Wales Road to the west, and along the north side of the railway line to the east. It is likely to have been intended to control a strategic north-south crossing of the railway line.
