Monument record MDO42703 - Probable Second World War roadblock at Wareham Bridge, Alington Avenue, Dorchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
The Pilbox Study Group note the site of a probable Second World War roadblock on Alington Avenue at or about its crossing over the Weymouth to London Waterloo railway line. The roadblock is inferred from RAF aerial photographs dated January 1947, but does not appear to be associated with any other defensive measures. However, the railway line is in cutting at this point, and the block was presumably intended to control a north-south crossing point.
